The Ins and Outs of Showing Cuff

With so many different opinions about showing cuff I thought it would be helpful to break down the different options as well as the look it reflects. A few months ago the three different fits offered at 9tailors were discussed. In general, but by no means is it a hard and fast rule, men tend to keep their cuff in line with the fit of the suit.

For a roomier cut, such as the American fit, it would be appropriate to have the entirety of your cuff covered by the jacket, leaving no cuff exposed. Although, some men with a slimmer fit also prefer to show no cuff at all.

For a European cut most men are comfortable with roughly .25" to .5" of cuff showing. This is probably the most popular style choice as it looks balanced with most fits.

Following with the trend some men, usually with a skinny cut suit, show up to 1" of cuff. Any more cuff than this showing- especially when one's arms are down- tends to throw off the proportions of the jacket.

Wedding FAQs:

1) How much is a custom designed suit and/or dress shirt?
A custom suit starts at $490.50 and a custom dress shirt starts at $79. There are various fabric types and collections, which may increase the final price. There is a 15% discount of wedding parties of 3 or more.

2) How long does the whole process take?
We recommend starting no later than 2 months before the big day. While we can turn suits faster than that, we would prefer 2 months to produce the suit around and make any last minute alterations or adjustments.

3) Should I bring my fiance with me to the appointment?
Yes! We definitely recommend bringing your significant other or a responsible member of the wedding party with you. This is particularly important if your fiance has very specific vision of what she or he wants!

4) What should I bring with me to the appointment?
If you bring a swatch of her dress, bridesmaid dresses or table linen, that all helps us to pair colors to together! We also recommend bringing the shoes or any other accessory that you might be wearing to the wedding as well.

5) I am planning to lose/gain weight before the wedding. Will my suit and dress shirt fit?
If you are planning to lose or gain weight, we will take your measurements during the first fitting. However, we will likely perform the alterations 1 month before the wedding or until you feel like your weight has stabilized.

What better way to show your special someone you care than entering them in a giveaway this Valentine's Day. And, for everyone still flying solo, we won't leave you out just because you're single. Studio Updates: Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year, including the weeks before and after, is the largest human migration on the planet. During this time Chinese workers from all over travel home for family reunions. Much of the country's business take extended holidays. Since our tailors will be with their families during this period please allow for a production time of 8 weeks on garments ordered in January.

Bow ties bring personality to any outfit. You’ll turn heads whether you’re wearing a brightly patterned bow tie or a simple black bow tie. And now there’s an even better reason to wear a bow tie proudly: BowTie Cause.

BowTie Cause is a non-profit organization founded by Dhani Jo nes, former NFL linebacker and University of Michigan alum. The organization partners with over 30 other organizations, like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, throughout the country to promote awareness, encourage philanthropy and support the mission of these charities. Dhani started BowTie Cause because he wanted to find a way to support his close friend, Kunta, who had been diagnosed with lymphoma cancer. Kunta had been the one to tell Dhani that, “If you want to be anybody, you have to rock the bow tie.”

Dhani did just that, and he started getting others to follow in his footsteps by rocking the bowtie to support organizations with the mission to help others. Not Your Regular White Dress Shirt

A staple, a boring necessity, a harbor of safety for the clothing shy, an opportunity to showcase your creativity to others. A white dress shirt that fits like a glove is a, like it or not, part of the foundation of a strong wardrobe- for work or otherwise. It can get you through just about any event in style, crisp classic style. Although if you need to beef up your arsenal of go-to shirts here is a great way to do it.

The idea may or may not have subconsciously come from those great photos of quadruplets dressed in complementary clothes.

Regardless of the origin, this tactic keeps your look fresh even when you are largely repeating the same outfit- as tradition outlines for men.

Let us check out the details on each shirt.

The whites are textured and the texture is matched by the pattern inside the collar and cuff. Then for a little extra- but not too much- there is contrast stitching on the cuffs. This allows for details even if the shirt is worn with a tie and the contrast fabric is hidden.

Purple, please. We have said time and time again purple is the cat's pajamas. Check out these two white shirts with an infusion of purple flare. This is a good way for the kids to ease into the deep end.

Shirt of the Week!

A few weeks back I mentioned that we got some new fabrics in the studio. Well, check this new one out. It takes a fearless man who has mastered colors and patterns to command a shirt as bold as this one. We know just the man. He regularly wears bow ties and playful colors, so this shirt fits nicely into his fun style.

To prevent the shirt from becoming aggressive rather than fun keep the bells and whistles to a minimum. In other words, keep the buttons standard and avoid competing accent fabrics in the collar or cuffs. Also, check out the style, very classic and clean to keep the pattern the focus.

Take a closer look, the darker accents are actually a deep purple and navy running parallel. He chose to do navy stitching on the button and buttonhole as his only addition to the shirt. This reinforces the custom look without going overboard.

Mind the Details

On my most recent trip to New York, while visiting clients at their offices, I noticed something that should not be overlooked . Gentlemen, please don't fall victim to this. I know buying clothes off the rack has a few perks( if only very few) but there are some issues that should be addressed before wearing it in public.

The vents are tacked closed- they are not intended to remain that way. This is done to help the jacket retain the proper shape during the traveling and/or trying on process.

Please, please cut the threads so they may break free and allow themselves to properly flatter your shape rather than making you look larger than you are- not to mention oblivious to details.

See how his vents have been cut loose and can now give the jacket the motion it was intended to have.

Also, the pockets may be done the same way. If you don't feel comfortable removing the threads yourself, alert the dry cleaner and they should be able to help you. Although, especially for women, make sure there is a pocket beneath the stitching. Do not be fooled by faux pockets and end up with a hole in you trousers or jacket.

Seasonal trend: Turtlenecks with Blazers

The idea of wearing turtlenecks under blazers might remind you of Ron Burgundy holding a glass of scotch. The key to pulling this look off (without looking like a 70's news anchor) is finding the right textures and colors to match your blazer.

For a more casual look, solid colored turtlenecks with a nice textured pattern (e.g. cable-knit sweaters) pair well with a fitted blazer.

I recently worked with Mark Anderson of the Patriots designing a suit and shirt for his upcoming events. While he was mostly easy going and open to suggestions, there were a few stipulations:

the suit must look good with brown shoes
the shirt and suit should be coordinated but not matching
on trend but not over-done

Most guys are operating on a limited selection of accessories. This means ties, pocket squares (if any), and shoes. With that in mind we set to work designing an inspired outfit to give an air of effortless cool.

After looking through hundreds of options we settled on this suit shirt combo.

We chose a medium grey which will look great with brown shoes, or black once he expands his shoe collection. The fabric also has a subtle plaid pattern to it with light pink, blue, and purple accents to make it more interesting. Shirt of the Week!

Just because it's getting dark outside doesn't mean you need to swap all of your colorful items for drab greys and bleak blacks. Anchor your lighter pieces with a darker contrast like one of our clients did below. A pink shirt doesn't need to be reserved for the spring and summer when paired with navy buttons and navy contrasting fabric.

If you want to get the most out of your contrasting buttons go ahead and do a double button cuff. This also works great if you just do a bright button on the cuffs for a more subtle approach.

He didn't want to stop at the collar and cuff but opted for contrasting fabric down the placket as well. This is a great option for a more casual look.

What made you decide to go into your current field?

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always been into menswear. I’d save my allowance, along with some help from my parents and a great aunt, and would make trips to DeeJay’s and Scribbles at the Burlington Mall.

I wasn’t eyeing fashion as a career. I graduated from Merrimack College with a degree in political science and thought about going to law school. After taking the LSAT I quickly realized I don’t like to read anything that isn’t men’s fashion related. So law school wasn’t going to work. Though I still fantasize about being a sports agent.

Why choose custom?

FIT.

Especially when it comes to suiting – custom is the only way to go. Custom is all about fit. The biggest most important word in menswear is that three letter F word – FIT. This is where so many guys go wrong. You’re not rowing a boat in your suit, so it’s okay to have it not fit like a windbreaker. Your pant length should not have a full break nor should the crotch go halfway down your thigh, your jacket sleeve should not even come close to hitting your knuckles, your jacket sleeves should not be able to accommodate Hulk Hogan’s biceps if you’re built like Michael Phelps, there’s no need for a man’s suit jacket to allow room for a pregnancy – men can’t get pregnant.

Custom can separate you from the herd. About a year and a half ago I had 9tailors make me a custom short sleeve French cuff shirt. To this day, I’ve never seen anyone else wear one, yet I receive tons of compliments when I wear it.

What would be your style advice to other men?

Confidence. If you don’t have it, get it. You can have all the clothes in the world but if you’re not confident and comfortable then you won’t wear them correctly.

Fit is just as important as confidence. See my answer above on how I feel about that.

Less is more. It’s not about owning 25 dress shirts that sort of fit. It’s about owning the few right timeless pieces or staples, which fit perfectly. Good will is your friend – donate.

It’s about taking it to that next level. Remain from getting bored with your style by throwing a pair of bright blue dress shoe laces on your dark brown wingtips, for example.

Details, details, details. It’s what gets you noticed in all the right ways. On a recent flight to Vegas I was heavily complimented by the flight attendants on my pocket square and again by strangers at the roulette table. Something as simple as a $20 pocket square can make the difference between looking awesome and looking just okay.

Color. Do not fear color. Black is for funerals and formal events. So many guys reach for blues, whites, and black because that’s what’s safe. I’m not saying that guys need to wear fuscia colored shirts, start off with muted pinks to ease yourself into new colors.

Patterns. There’s more to fabric than just solids. Consider a pinstripe suit, or a paisley pocket square, or a bold silk repp tie, or a gingham dress shirt. Don’t be afraid to go pattern on pattern. Rules were made to be broken.

Shoes - so very important. If you can only afford one pair of dress shoes, that is perfectly fine. Invest in a nice dark brown or tan leather pair of lace up dress shoes, I like Grenson shoes. Spend the extra money and get them with a re-craftable leather sole, this way they will last for a very long time with the proper care.

Suit up, and not just on special occasions. If you can only buy one suit, make it a solid medium grey 3 piece suit. Grey can be worn with tan, dark brown, or black leather shoes. White shirts, pink shirts, blue shirts, and purple shirts all go nicely with grey. Grey compliments any skin tone. Just remember, fit reigns supreme. Without the proper fit, it’s all for not.

Meet Tee: Virtual Client, Personal Trainer and Model

Remember Tee Major, one of our models from a few seasons ago? He's the handsome gentlemen in the picture above in a 9tailors red gingham shirt. If not, you may recognize him because he was one of the twenty-one best bodies in Boston according to Stuff in 2010. Check Tee's amazing photo out here (Worth a look, we promise!).

Since our last photo shoot, Tee has been busy. We mean very busy. He moved half way across the world to do something that some would find unimaginable. Tee moved to Iraq to run one of the gyms owned by the Department of Defense and personally train American soldiers who are stationed there. Talk about intense.
Tee told us: "I love serving others, I love training, and I'm an adrenaline junky. I have trained professional athletes, college athletes, children, and men/women of all sizes and ages. In my opinion, training military (which is called the tactical segment) was the next step to develop myself as a top fitness professional. When the opportunity presented itself to train in Iraq I saw it as a way to serve others, serve my country, and quench my thirst for excitement."

Last month, Tee contacted us and told us know that he would need a suit for an upcoming wedding state side. We happily agreed. One challenge? Tee was still in Iraq at the time and he needed the suit and shirt within 3 weeks. So, we scheduled a virtual fitting with him. We also discussed his fit and design preferences as if he were right here in the studio.

A friend measures Tee's biceps. Yep, 19" in circumference. Perhaps, a record at 9tailors?

Tee said that he chose custom because his "body dimensions are not 'off the rack'." According to him, "I have broad chest and shoulders, freakishly large arms, and a small waist. Nothing ever fits quite right. So it's a comfort thing, but it's also a confidence thing. You feel more confident knowing that the suit you are wearing is as unique as your fingerprint."

Two weeks later, the suit arrived in the studio. This is what the suit looked like. It needed some minor tweaks, but overall he looked great in his 9tailors suit and shirt!

Why choose custom?

It's obvious that you have to have a cereal-box body to look good in off-the-shelf clothing. I've always been in need of either a custom clothing designer or a REALLY good tailor. Even my trusty Club Monaco has begun to sell "Classic Fit" clothing, which is a fancy way of saying clothing that costs them less to manufacture and will make you look homeless. Going custom is the only way to guarantee my satisfaction.

What would be your style advice to other men in your professional field?

Leave your cross-trainers at home and learn to tie a tie. Just because the dress code is business casual doesn't mean you can't step it up and look like a professional. That suit you bought for $50 for "special occasions" makes you look like a 12 year old playing dress-up in daddy's clothes. Where are your hands?

How would you describe your style?
Edgy modern twist on 1920's classic (leave out the pleats and 3-button coats). My more casual days are punk prep.

What/who inspires your style?
-My grandmother and her traditional values of formal attire and "dressing for success"
-James Bond (specifically Daniel Craig)
-Mercedes AMG: classic luxury with an edgy twist hiding shear madness.
-The idea of being the only person who gets dressed in the morning and possibly being commended for it.

What is your favorite piece from 9tailors?

My most heavily worn pieces would include my purple check/white collar shirt and grey vest. Although I haven't worn it yet, I am quite fond of my winter tuxedo.

As any chemist knows, the devil is in the details. Matt's mastery of commanding the smallest components of his ensembles shows. Check out those metal buttons on the pants and vest.

Another detail, that does not go unnoticed, is the contrast fabric on the besoms. This is the same fabric that the pants are made from helping tie the two separates together without having to fully match.

One of our clients in Brooklyn designed the shirt below. He used some of the new fabrics we recently added to our growing collection for the accents. Check out his creation!

He used a grey broadcloth for the shirt and a purple plaid for the accent color. The final touch- navy buttons. This is a great day to night shirt. Wear it with a purple tie and a navy suit for the office then chuck the tie and swap the slacks for jeans to create an evening look great for grabbing dinner and drinks.

Meet Bryan: Nothing finishes a look better than a cocktail in hand....

Meet our client turned model, Bryan, wearing a 9tailors midnight navy tuxedo (which we have a deal on at the moment, here). Towering above most at well over 6 feet custom emphasizes his height without packing on unnecessary bulk.
For his look we styled two separate versions of the same suit. First, was a more formal and conservative look. This included a bowtie, understated cufflinks, a white pocket square, and standard lace-up shoes.

For the second version Bryan pulled out some of his own brightly colored cufflinks, a slim silk tie, a patterned pocket square, and a pair of buckled Hugo Boss shoes. We left out the sometimes-stuffy waist covering and added a belt and a cocktail, his favorite accessory.

Fashion as History: The Nehru Jacket

The beauty of custom suiting is having the ability to design nearly whatever your imagination can create. Aside from the personally designed suits we have four choices for lapel styles. The classic notched, the formal shawl, the black tie peaked, and the Nehru.

The last option often confuses or amuses. So, I wanted to provide a little more information on the origins and appropriate settings for this non-Western style.

First brought to the limelight during the reign of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. The jacket essentially blends the achkan and Western style suit jacket.

Wearing the Nehru style jacket was a way for politicians to seem progressive without abandoning their traditional dress completely. This endeared them not only to the more conservative crowd but also the more liberal groups through the power of dress.

In the Western world it has been linked to a Mod fashion statement, most notably seen in the 60's, or the contemporary portrayal of the era (Dr. Evil).

Black Tie: A Primer

Despite systematic assaults by era, the Classic Black Tie ensemble has remained the gold standard for formal events. The lines created emphasize the masculinity, height, and strength of those who wear it. While details may be tweaked for a more contemporary look, the foundation is unchanged by fads such as ruffled shirts and aggressive colors.

Because of the strong roots of tradition I wanted to provide a quick tutorial on Tuxedos. More detailed information can be found here, from the Black Tie Guide.

The main components of a tuxedo include a jacket with satin accents, slacks with satin accents, a tuxedo shirt, and a waist covering. The waist covering can be either a cummerbund or a vest.

The jacket is set apart from a regular suit jacket with 3 components. The lapel shape is different from a regular business suit and come in two forms: peaked and shawl. Not only is the cut of the lapel different from a business suit but it is also done in satin to signify the added formality. The buttons and the besoms are also done in satin. Last, the jacket is traditionally one button, rather than the popular business style of two.

The slacks are fitted the same way as regular suit pants with the a satin stripe down the side of the pant. Traditionally, men wear a waist covering with a tuxedo, although in recent years many men leave out the vest or cummerbund in favor of belts. A good compromise for more conservative settings is wearing suspenders without a waist covering.

The shirt should also be crisp white. The original purpose of the tuxedo bib on the shirt is to achieve a bright, just bleached type of white and allow gentlemen to wear it without an undershirt.

If you have not reached a point in your life where you feel you need a tuxedo shirt aim for one with french cuffs. This will be the extra detail that makes your look complete for a special event.

Step 2- Find a friend. If you do not have one willing, ask your mother. If she is busy, ask your neighbors. If they are busy, fly to Boston so a trained style consultant can help directly. Although, you may want to bring an umbrella.

Step 3- Gather necessary items including: tailors tape measure, computer with camera, and, said aide from Step 2.

Step 4- Using video chat link up with a 9tailors style consultant.

Step 5- Take measurements and fit preferences. During the appointment you will be coached through the measuring process by a consultant.

Step 6- Wait patiently for your custom items to arrive at your doorstep (or cubicle)!

Step 7- Repeat process for a continually improving wardrobe.

Seeing Double- Fall 2011 Trends

While women's fashion is volatile and swiftly changing, the fashion moguls of men's wear tend to employ more subtle changes. Last season we saw a spike in three-piece suits. This season we're seeing double- double breasted that is. Small changes to the classic suit make for bold statements in the world of suits. Here are a few examples off the runway.

The model to the left is wearing a Dolce & Gabanna while the model to the right is wearing DKNY.

The key to wearing a suit that is slightly daring is impeccable fit. If it hugs the body in the right places while emphasizing a masculine physique you will look like a master of style rather than a victim of fashion. Another component is color. The suits that step out from the current norm should be in subtle hues to let their shape come through.

Proportions are also key when concerning double breasted jackets. Carefully look at the amount of shirt showing, the "V" of the jacket can be altered depending on your preferences and figure. The two Gucci suits above have a deeper "V" and would flatter a shorter man.

Peaked lapels are also very attractive in a double breasted jacket, or coat, as they accentuate the shoulders. Since there is more fabric over one's midsection the peaked lapels draw the eye out to prevent a bulky look.

Pants that Changed the World

Fads come and go but some make an impression that lasts. Check out the pants that changed the world, even if their brightest moment was fleeting-thankfully.

Probably the most memorable pants are those that MC Hammer famously flaunted.

Their unflattering silhouette makes for a diaper inspired look even on the most toned bodies. These should only make an appearance on Halloween.

Another fad tragedy was Zubaz. Created by a couple wrestlers on the road who wanted something more comfortable, and fashionable, to work out in these pants took the world by storm. Usually worn with a mullet and equally ostentatious shirt these pants guarantee to please even the most discerning of fashionistas.

The company went bankrupt a few years after its birth and was subsequently named in the top three horrible things to happen to sports that year. What a legacy for zebra print.

The most recent of the three would be this...Sagging.

Why must boys show off their underwear? There is nothing flattering, or practical, about wearing your pants well below your backside. And, why is he wearing a belt?

Meet Etienne: Never overlook the small details...

Emmys 2011: The good, the bad, and the ugly

Another award show has come to an end. It left some lasting impressions, good and bad. Here are the successes and casualties of the night.

Good.

Hamm may not have won any awards for his acting but we give him the vote for best dressed of the evening. His Tom Ford double breasted shawl collar tuxedo he draws attention to all the right places. The proportions are great and accentuate his masculine silhouette.

Chris Colfer also looks great in a tailored suit by Dior Homme and slightly unkempt skinny tie which adds to his appeal and emphasizes his youth.

Hands down the best group of the night. Not only did the cast of Modern Family sweep the awards ceremony with 5 big wins, but they were the best dressed group of the night. The younger members appropriately dressed their age while the senior members of the group were the picture of polished.

Bad.

Shawl collars are great, when done right. But, thin and leather? The only saving grace here is the fit. Please reconsider your attempt to be trendy the next time you don a tuxedo. Jon Cryer could use some help next year, just ask Jon Hamm how it's done.

Ugly.

Please Sir, button up, or button down the right way. Did you forget to fasten the top 5 buttons? Or, are you simply trying to emphasize your enormous pectoral muscles that are coincidentally oiled up?

Meet Micah: Dress like you give a damn...

Meet one of our stylish clients, Micah Whitson. He's the proprietor and designer of a fantastic print shop, Old Try that specializes in southern themes and motifs here in Massachusetts. One of our favorite prints? One that exclaims, "Hotty Toddy Gosh Almighty!" He's also the one who designed our profile picture above.

Micah never ceases to amaze his us with his taste, classic with a modern and quirky twist. Micah is also trendsetter among his fellow colleagues. He started "Formal Fridays," where he'll wear a suit to work on Fridays (he hasn't missed a Friday since he started it several years ago). Remember these shoes from Back to the Future II?

Now you can own a pair from Nike.

Pretty awesome, don't you think? While it doesn't lace up up on its own, the shoes are styled very similarly as the originals in the movie. Most importantly, though, the shoes (only 1,500 released by Nike), are being auctioned on eBay. Proceeds for the 10-day auction will go towards fighting Parkinson's Disease. The Michael J. Fox Foundation will match all donations up to $50 million. It's pretty pricey right now with current bids ranging from $4500 to $5100+. My recommendation? Bid now.

Sergio Brown, #31 on the Patriots, stopped by our studio last night for his first suit and shirt fitting. His suit arrived just in time for the Patriot's first game of the season. Here's how everything turned out:

Sergio chose a three-piece gray suit with lavender pinstripes. He's also wearing a lavender/pink shirt with a wide spread collar. With a nice pocket square and tie, it should complete the look!

Fashion as History: All the King's Men are Unbuttoned

Ever wonder why men don't button the bottom button on their suits? Well, get ready for another history lesson, or at least an exploration of legends.

The norm is to have the top button of a suit done while the second, or top and bottom if it is a three button, undone. Where did this begin? As all things sartorial are a mixture of history and myth here is the most popular, and entertaining, of the explanations.

Here are two examples of the norm buttoning techniques from two of the best dressed men in The States.

Rumor has it that King Edward VII was the pioneer of the unbuttoned suit. Perhaps because of the decadent lifestyle led by a King, he grew rather round- to be kind. Round enough to where the buttons on his jacket would pull tight when buttoned. It even got to the point where the bottom button, at the fullest point of his protruding belly, could not be buttoned at all.

His loyal followers, the aristocracy of society, began to emulate the King in order to avoid offense. As this was the upper crust of the community the style trickled through the classes and over time became the accepted norm.

Alternatives to this colorful story may be that it is simply more comfortable, quicker, and flattering to keep the last button undone on a two button jacket, even more so on a three button.

Well gentlemen, here you have it. Tweeds in every shade and weave. Request after request, we now have what you all seem to be craving. With fall lurking just around the corner here are some chunkier fabrics to usher in that cozy feeling that autumn brings.

How to Care for Your 9tailors Items

While we are constantly stressing the importance of a good fitting pair of slacks and tailored shirts, once you have these flattering garments in your possession it is your duty to keep them looking sharp.

A common misconception about shirts is that dry cleaning is the best route for maintaining cleanliness and shape of your clothing. False!

The chemicals used during the dry cleaning process are very harsh on the finely woven fibers of your shirts. Regular dry cleaning will actually break down the integrity of your shirts sooner than good old fashioned laundering. Most dry-cleaners will offer laundering services and it would behoove you to opt out of chemicals in favor of a gentler cleaning agent. Not to mention the savings of the switch.

Now, if you care for your shirts at home just wash and hang dry. Avoid the dryer if possible.

As for suits, these are much more sensitive. While it would be best to avoid cleaning them at all, that may lead to a long lonely life as you stench may ward off potential companions. Just to refresh your memory never, and I mean never, put a suit in a washing machine. Unless of course you have this suit in which case feel free to shower with it on.

Dry cleaning a few times a year would be the best action to take with your suits. As dry cleaning is very harsh on your clothing it is in your interest to avoid dry cleaning but spot cleaning and brushing are highly recommended. Follow up with a professional steam pressing to get a crisp look.

Make sure to hang your suits after each wear by following the crease in each pant and draping them over a hanger. Hangers are also important because the wrong types, such as wire hangers, can permanently warp your clothing. By keeping your suits properly stored they will have a chance to air out before you wear them again.

Never a dull moment in the 9tailors studio and this weekend was no different. Not only was the studio abuzz with sample sale appointments we also had the pleasure of designing a three piece suit for a newly signed Patriots player. Officially added to the 53 man roster on October 23, 2010, Sergio Brown made some time, despite the grueling training, to come into the studio and design a suit for some upcoming events.

Guided by his personal style consultant, Sergio sifted through hundreds of fabrics before making his decision. After choosing the fabric and style options he was measured to ensure a proper fit.

Studio Updates: August

Defining Fit

When buying a suit, either off the rack or tailored, it is imperative to understand the different forms of fit available that way you are better equipped to describe your requirements. While custom suiting offers more versatility in terms of shape and structure there is still basic terminology that will help you get your preferences across.

At 9tailors we work with our clients to make garments that fit exactly how they imagine their clothing to fit. For some this means a roomier fit, others want it to feel like a second layer of skin. Whatever your preferences, we have a fit to suit you. Now I will break down the three basic choices.

American: This is our roomier option. This is for men that prefer more room between themselves and the suit, upwards of 5 inches. It has more movement room but also looses some of its shape in the process and becomes slightly boxy. It is less tapered in the waist than its European or skinny counterpart and is reminiscent of how a suit would fit if purchased off the rack. The model in the photo below is pictured wearing a European cut suit with a red outline to demonstrate how the suit would fit had it been an American cut. The legs would be wider and the waist of the jacket much less tapered.

European: This is our most popular option. It has roughly 3 to 4 inches of ease between your body and the suit. This fit has a tailor look without becoming restrictive. The legs of the trousers are tapered without being slim and calling up images of skinny jeans. The jacket is trim at the waist without pulling and giving off the image you are wearing your younger brothers clothing. It has been described before as a confident fit. The slight taper lends itself to show off (or create) broader shoulders and a trimmer waist, making those who wear it feel confident.

Skinny Fit: This is usually reserved for the seasoned professionals of custom. It is extremely fitted and close to the body with an ease around 2 inches. The model below, featured in a European fit, is outlined in red to illustrate how a skinny would fit. As apparent in the photo, it is very slim through the legs of the trousers and the body of the jacket is trim against his waist.

These are just templates to allow your style consultant to gather your preferences. The beauty of custom suiting is having the ability to get your suit to fit your body properly. But by understanding the underlying fits offered you are in a better position to make decisions to fit your body and lifestyle.

Tsaiclip: Tie clips just got hairy

Yes, that is in fact a tie clip in the shape of a perfectly groomed handlebar moustache made a reality by Tsaiclip. Go ahead and revel in the beauty that is the modern fascination with moustaches.

Made by dynamic duo Eddie and Jennifer, this little gem will provide an extra sartorial punch to any outfit and as they like to point out, "avoid all sorts of tie mishaps." I had to ask them some questions to figure out how they thought of it, and what took them so long?

Our conversation went a little something like this:

Q: How did you get started, what gave you the idea of making mustache tie clips? Where was this gem of an idea hatched?

A: Jennifer attended a moustache party where basically everyone sported a moustache and she had a great time. Eddie watched a lot of Mad Men and started to notice tie clips and slim ties come back in fashion. Together they came out of a department store and somehow the brilliant idea was hatched. Then one fateful day, Eddie and Jennifer went to the “Festival of New Ideas” hosted by the New Museum on Bowery. One of the booths we came across was Kickstarter -where we were convinced was a perfect platform to see if an idea like this would stick. it’s been 3 weeks in and we’re happy to report it’s doing well!

A: We are currently selling the moustache tie clips through Kickstarter until August 1 and are currently discounted to $25. These will retail for $35 after our project is funded and people will be able to purchase it directly off our website. We’ve also contacted some buyers in order to get retail presence as we feel they truly look better in person than online.

Q: Do you hope to expand to other types of tie clips? Maybe other types of mustaches?

A: Nothing is for certain at this point. We have some ideas of exploring different colors, styles, textures but are taking things one step at a time.

Much of the attention, from magazines to TV, has focused on what Kate wore during the royal's visit to North America. Of course, she looked glamorous. Of course, she looked beautiful. But, what about Prince William? How did he stand up? Let's break it down.

Formal Wear:
There's no doubt about it. William can wear tuxedo - a double-breasted suit with a wide peaked lapel at that. His taste in men's formal wear is classic and sophisticated. His tuxedo jacket is perfectly tailored to his slim build. The pants are a nice width - too skinny and it might look too trendy. The broad lapels accentuate his square shoulders, giving him the perfect V shape. He's tuxedo studs are off-white, which shows that he is into understated accessories and details. There's nothing flashy about his outfit, yet he stands out even when his wife looks as gorgeous as she does.

Casual Wear:
The man can do plaid and jeans. While we're not fans of the cowboy hat, William does provide us with a good lesson - one should always dress appropriately for any occasion. The looser-fit, plaid shirt the medium wash jeans says that he's relaxed, but not sloppy. Not every occasion requires one to wear a super tight shirt, like this guy. Another fantastic lesson is that William knows proportions. He knows with his looser-fit shirt, he should wear jeans of equal looseness.

Smart-Casual Wear -
William looks very handsome in his white pants, dress shirt and navy blazer. The only way to describe this look is, "smart." Here, William shows us that men can wear light colored pants (yes, even white!) in the summer, while looking cool and effortless. If you're too clumsy for white, choose pants are in sand, smoke or faded salmon. If you're trying to avoid beachy, pair your look with a darker, contrasting jacket in a poplin, cotton and light weight summer wool.

Fashion as History: The Tie

Ever wonder why formal dress for men involves a knotted piece of silk hanging from their neck like an expensive noose? Well in an attempt to explain all things sartorial another Google search followed. It seems, as most of mens' traditionally formal pieces, to have originated in the military. This knotted piece of fabric used to adorn the neck was clearly very striking. Since then it has evolved and taken root in the acceptable attire for men. The more detailed version goes something like this...

The modern day tie is a descendant from the cravat. This made its debut around 1630 on the necks of Croatian mercenaries during the Thirty Years' War. Croatian poet Ivan Gundulic is shown below in the first known painting to picture a cravat in 1622. The French admired the look and began to do it themselves. Stiff collars and copious amounts of ruffles were replaced with sleeker, free flowing cravats made of anything from muslin, to fine linen, to lace.

The look made its way to England after Charles II made his way back to the isles after exile and imported the look. It continually evolved as the years went on until we have the tie of today. There are many different types of neck wear now such as the bowtie, the tie, the ascott, the bolo tie (the official necktie of Arizona).

The tie has been criticized as a restrictive element of formal dress that serves no actual purpose and can actually become a safety hazard. But more often than not it is simply worn unquestioningly. Some companies have abolished formal attire in the workplace and the result has been something of a never ending casual Friday where employees have been emboldened to wear flip flops and Hawaiian shirts to work. Some companies, such as IKEA, have actually abolished the use of neckties for their workers.

Wrongly Accused? Boston as America's Worst Dressed City.

Well fellow Bostonians, here we are, #1 again. If the Bruin's latest victory wasn't enough, we are once again on top. But this time it's based on whats at the bottom of the barrel. Elected the worst dressed city in America, this isn't the top spot any city wants to hold.

Is it deserved? Or, is this a jab from a New York based publication (a small outfit that goes by the name GQ) that only serves the biased agenda of our greatest rival? One thing is for certain, none of our clients are contributing to the problem.

The piece, by GQ, does provide one out for this great city by acknowledging that a large portion of the population is composed of undergraduates that continuously don their leggings as pants, hoodies as formal outerwear, and uggs as fashionable footwear.

This should not be held against the population at large but another acute observation should be taken to heart, "'But Boston is the epicenter of prep style!,' you say? That's true, but it's with a little extra that ends up ruining everything: Khakis!—with pleats. Boat shoes!—with socks. Knit ties!—actually, no one in Boston seems to have ever seen one of these."

Last week sports gods and goddesses came out for the night to celebrate their achievements in the athletic world and to show off their fashion savvy (or lack thereof) outside the stadium. Here are some top picks from the night.

Blake Griffin is easily sporting the best look of the night. His light grey three piece suit is perfectly paired with a patterned tie picking up the blue tones in his jacket and a tie bar to add some extra interest.

Well doesn't he clean up nicely, kinda. Tim Thomas of the Bruins managed to keep a slightly unkempt look while at the same time looking as polished as we have ever seen him. Blue is a great color for him and the monochromatic palate is understated enough to make him feel comfortable in that suit.

For a bowtie that really pops use contrasting colors like Tyson Chandler of the Mavericks. The large black bowtie against the white shirt and cream tuxedo jacket really make a statement.

This one needs no explanation. Brian Wilson of the Giants has very specific taste.

Fashion as History: Suit Sleeve Buttons

At 9tailors we get all sorts of clients coming in the studio. Some want to be dressed properly with minimal amount of involvement and some know exactly what they want. But it's the curious clients that push your knowledge farther. They want to know what a sleeve placket is, if french cuffs come with a sleeve placket button, why suits have sleeve buttons and the questions keep coming. The last question was slightly vexing. Why do suits have sleeve buttons? Clearly for decoration now and in ceremony of tradition, but how did they get there in the first place?

After doing some diligent Google searches it seems there is no consensus. A few different tales exist as to why suits have sleeve buttons.

Theory #1: The commander tends to change throughout the stories, but the foundation remains the same. It goes something like this: An army commander was tired of the slovenly appearance of his troops. How they wiped their noses, wounds, and all other sorts of bodily fluids on their sleeves. To prevent his troops using their sleeves as Kleenex he had buttons sewn on the sleeves to it would scratch their noses and deter the men from unnecessarily dirtying their coats.

This is refuted because the placement of the buttons would not be enough to prevent using your sleeve as a handkerchief as you can simply rotate your wrist and have a space free of face-scratching hazards. But some claim the original placement of buttons was around the cuff rather then up the sleeve, this may have had slightly more impact on the nose-wiping phenomenon
Above is a photo of British military uniforms used in the Revolutionary War. The cuffs on the jackets are encircled in buttons which simply adds to the evidence in favor of theory #1.

Theory #2: This is a double whammy. Essentially for the versatility sleeves had buttons, working buttonholes mind you- a surgeons cuff. Some said it was for surgeons to be able to unbutton and roll up their coat sleeves as to keep them out of blood and guts. Another idea, quite similar, was for soldiers to roll down their sleeves, made purposely longer, during the winter to cover their hands for extra warmth.
Here is a photo of a surgeons cuff. It would make it much easier for medics to roll up their sleeves on the battlefield to keep clean.

Theory #3: Another idea as to the use of sleeve buttons was for handkerchiefs or gloves. It was a place where men, and soldiers, could hook their items. Possible, but not nearly as cleaver or entertaining as the first theory.

Theory #4: This has been floating around simply because of its common sense approach to the whole idea. Some have said it was just a place to store extra buttons. This is feasible. Although, why wouldn't tailors put the buttons in a safer place (inside the jacket) as they do today?

This father son combo has mastered the subtle differences that make a classic dress shirt exclusively your own. The navy buttons only on the cuffs keep the shirt from becoming too loud while giving it a boost of personality. The button down collar keeps it casual and the contrasting fabric makes it fun.

How To: Wear an Unconventional Wedding Suit

Supermodel, Kate Moss, and rocker, Jamie Hince of The Kills were wed late last week. While we were loving the model's beautifully beaded gown, we couldn't help notice the awesome suit the groom was wearing! A double-breasted, gray-blue suit can be difficult to wear if you're not a slim guy like Jamie. But, here are some tips to make his look more wearable!

1. If you choose to do a unconventional color (like black, charcoal, navy, etc.), keep the hues subdued and subtle. You don't want to look like you're going to an 80s prom.

2. Keep the silhouette slim through the torso and legs. The shoulder pads should be kept to a minimum as to avoid the football player look. While Jamie did a fantastic job of keeping things skinny, I would have had his tailor shorten his shirt sleeves a little bit. Half to quarter inch of sleeve peaking through is fine, but three inches seems a bit much.

3. Wear a ankle boots. Many men ask us what footwear to wear with their skinny pants. The shoe's laces and tongue can add bulk around the ankle. I like ankle boots under skinny boots because it not only has a edgier feel to it, but it also keeps things simple and sleek. Thus, the pant opening can slip easily over the shoe.

4. Mix it up with a striped or patterned shirt. Sure. There's definitely less "thinking" involved when putting together your solid shirt and tie combo. But, a patterned shirt can give your overall look that fun it was missing. Choose a pattern that still complements the colors in your suit. Here, Jamie does it by going with a striped shirt in a darker hue than his suit.

5. Go with a silk scarf tie instead of a regular tie. We like the ones from Hermès, of course. They are light-weight and quirky. It's less precise and crisp than a normal tie for a man. The scarf ties can be worn like a tie or wrapped simply around the neck.

The lovely bride, Liana, is founder and executive director at New Brahmin, a style and fashion blog. Her husband, Michael is the owner of one of Cambridge's newest and hippest restaurants, Area Four.

Liana and Michael were married on a farm in Western Massachusetts. It was one part part Ralph Lauren, one part cowboy and one part bad-ass. We made classic vests in a beautiful, textural gray herringbone and white oxford dress shirts. Both vest and shirts were accented in a velvety, brushed buffalo check in red and black. In the Know: The Custom Process

With all the style tips and ideas coming your way we thought it would be important to let everyone know, who hasn't worked with us before, how the Design It Yourself process works. Sam, the founder and CEO, like to refer to our work as, "build a bear for custom clothing." Essentially we help our clients, men and women, sift through all the options to find exactly what they are looking for based on the events they plan on wearing their new garments to. So, let me walk you through the process.

1. The Meeting- As a first time client we like to get to know you. Asking questions about your work culture and lifestyle you live is crucial to helping us help you. By finding out what you wear to work, the fundraising events you attend, the number of weddings you frequent and, the types of events you participate in gives your style consultant a better idea of what you are looking for.

2. Choosing the fabric- After the initial meeting you and your style consultant will begin looking for the desired fabric. We have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 swatches of suit material and nearly 1,200 shirting fabrics to sift through. Your style consultant will make it a manageable process by searching for specific styles to match your preferences and fit your lifestyle.

3. Style Components- Shirts: Now that you have chosen the fabric that compliments you, you will choose your collar, cuffs, placket, back style, and buttons. If you wear a tie your style consultant will help you choose a collar that will not only fit the type of knot you tie but also complement your face shape. If you are planning to use it as a casual shirt your style consultant will show you some options, such as the roll tab or button down collar, that are appropriate for the occasions you plan to wear the shirt to.

4. Measurements: To ensure a proper fit we take, at minimum, 14 measurements for shirts and 24 for suits. Another thing to consider is bringing in a suit or shirt that you really like so we have a better idea of how you prefer your clothing to fit.
For suits the wait is somewhere between 3-4 weeks. It is slightly longer for shirts taking 4-5 weeks. If you have ordered more than one shirt and it is your first time working with 9tailors we will only submit one to start with. That way we can ensure we have your measurements and fit preferences perfect before making more.

5. First fitting- After your items come in we will ask you to schedule a fitting. Now we are open 7 days a week to make it even easier to find time to come in. The fittings last for no longer than 30 minutes. You will come into the studio and try on your garments and your style consultant will walk you through each component of the suit or shirt and check on the fit. This way you can be confident in the fit of your new clothing.
For suits first round alterations are common. These are done locally and will typically take about a week to be completed. At that point you can come back to the studio for a second fitting.

6. Second fitting- After all required and requested alterations have been completed on the suit or shirt you can come back for a second fitting to confirm the fit. If you are satisfied with the fit you will be able to take it home and begin wearing it! If not, we would be more than happy to alter the item again or reorder it to your specifications. With a 100% satisfaction guarantee the risk is eliminated.

7. Take it home- After you take it home you have 30 days to test drive it. Go ahead and wash your shirts, we suggest you launder rather than dry clean them to prevent unnecessary wear and tear. Get the suit pressed and wear it out. This is the best way to really decide if something fits you properly. Go dancing, go to those client meetings, go traveling, that way you can really decide if the fit you chose fits your lifestyle and comfort preferences. If you find there is something you want to change feel free to bring it back to the studio and we will make any necessary changes, all alterations within that 30 day period are included.

8. Repeat steps 1-7. Now that you know the process don't be shy about designing all your shirts yourself. Get creative!

Try This: Beyond Bold

The beauty of custom is having the ability to create nearly anything you can think of. If your creativity knows no bounds, neither will your suit. One of our clients had the notion to create a suit so bold it could, literally, blind people with its outlandish appearance. This is not for the faint of heart. It takes a special type of person to pull off a suit of this caliber. Its shiny exterior coupled with a lavender lined interior creates a one of a kind suit.

Please, gentlemen, get yourself a pocket square. Matching is fine if you prefer the continuity of a single color.

It comes down to the tiniest details with this one. Rather than the standard four sleeve buttons he opted for the high end, sophisticated look pushed by Gucci. Five sleeve buttons with the last left undone proudly announces another level of luxury.

The welted edge and lining reinforce the uninhibited nature of this beast. Let a style consultant at 9tailors know if you have an idea so preposterous it must be specially made for you.
