Spring Trends 2013 for the Everyday Man Part 1

The fanciest fashionista, Derek Zoolander, courtesy of benstiller.net
So, maybe you're not a super fashion savvy dude (although your girlfriend/wife/partner might wish you were). And hey, that's fine if you don't follow the trends or want to leave your comfort zone, we completely sympathize with streamlining classic looks. Man strolling the runway in couture designs doesn't always translate to man strolling the street in whatever he feels like. Boston is definitely no Paris.

Our main goal here at 9tailors is to capture the essence of you and your personality and translate it into suits, shirts, and suit separates that do three things: keep you comfortable, flatter your body type, and well, look GOOD. We pay close attention to modern trends that unfold and subtly introduce them, but if you are going for a classic look, then we wholeheartedly hear that and raise you one better. Ultimately, we identify what your personal style represents about you and guide you towards fabrics and patterns you like.

Spring Trends in 2013 that we think anyone can pull off. Keep in mind, maybe it's just one garment or accent you add to complete your whole outfit.

Military Style
This does not mean cargo shorts! However, go for jackets with a nicely snug fit, clean lines, and buttons. Also, camouflage is okay, only in the brown, army green, beige varieties; not blue, not black, not orange or any other crazy color. Bomber military jackets? Check. See styles from Hentsch Man  and Tom Ford below:

Lest we forget. The only men and women who should be wearing full on fatigues are our wonderful veterans and our dedicated soldiers in active combat, thank you for all that you do for us!!!

Floral Paisley Accents
Some of you would never imagine putting flowers on your tux. We get it. But what about in the form a pocket square? What about on the inside of your jacket?

Color
Don't be afraid of it. Embrace it, love it, WEAR IT. You don't have to do a full on suit like the guys below, but add an accent piece to make your outfit pop.

OoOTie Bow Tie - All Right, All Right, All Right.

Do you own a bow tie? If you don't, then you should. This timeless fad has come a long way! With all of the varying tie knots out there, this fashionable version will never go out of style. And with so many trendsetters coming to our studio, it was about time we ramp up our accessory selection. That's why we have launched OoOTie at 9tailors! The founders, Matthew Pearlson, Adrian Rodriguez, and Diego Torres-Palma put a modern twist on the classic item, but their looks are nothing short of extraordinarily hip.

And while many fellas don the bow tie for novelty purposes, it's a very fashion-forward accent to give your suit or shirt that extra oomph of awesome. Still unsure if you can get away with a bow tie? Check out the OoOTie App to browse and "try on" the fancy collar-wear from their collection!

“OoOtie’s app makes buying bow ties simple. Our collection is designed to work with your existing wardrobe, and we make it easy for men to understand where and how to wear a modern bow tie.”

The patterns, available year round, can be sported within any season. Limited editions occur on occasion. And if you're an artist who has an idea for a bow tie, feel free to submit your creative ideas as  OoOTie  is always on the hunt for new inspirations.

suit yourself: people with style (awei)

in response to sam's interview, which truly features an individiual with style, i scanned my mental rolodex in hopes of finding an haute-couture friend or acquaintance that i could showcase and trump sam with. alas, the only individual i located is my former college roommate who asked to be referred to as raging yak to protect his anonymity.

while raging yak may not be the paradigm of high fashion, he does possess his own unique style; a style which has been mainly defined by a lengthy, driven, successful career on Wall Street. here's what he had to say:
awei: u busy?
r. yak: i got time for you
awei: cool. i'm doing "homework" for sam related to her custom tailoring business.
awei: 6 easy questions. you got a few?
r. yak: ok
r. yak: shoot
awei: Define your personal style.
r. yak: conservative
awei: ok.
awei: What's the coolest thing you own in your closet?
r. yak: a sweater hoodie from banana republic
awei: that sounds quite cool.
r. yak: haha
awei: What/Who inspires you? Why?
awei: (in terms of fashion)
r. yak: oh thanks for qualifying
r. yak: i was going to go in a very diff direction with that question
awei: yea, not ghandi
r. yak: i would say my current boss
r. yak: my sense of fashion is set by the way he dresses
r. yak: i am a conformist
awei: that's an endearing quality.
awei: next question: What is your worst-ever fashion-faux pas?
r. yak: cheapness
r. yak: in my first job out of college
r. yak: as a banker, i wore my suits and my shoes until they had rips and refused to buy new ones. it took my boss to tell me that i had to keep up appearances or else i would never get ahead in this world. so i had to invest in my wardrobe
awei: i see.
awei: thanks for sharing.
awei: What would you never be caught wearing?
r. yak: i would really wear anything
awei: another man's face a-la-silence of the lambs?
r. yak: why not?
awei: good question... why not?
r. yak: the question is more what would i never buy?
awei: ok, what would you never buy?
r. yak: i understand now that clothes are an investment. and i only buy clothes that contribute to my career. so anything else, i won't buy
r. yak: i.e. another man's face = no
r. yak: unless there is a compelling return
awei: makes logical sense.
awei: final question: How would you wear a button-down dress shirt? (e.g., tucked in/out, under a vest, under a blazer, slim fitted, unbuttoned)
r. yak: tucked in with a tie with a suit
awei: very conservative.
r. yak: yup
awei: thanks for your the time. do you mind if i post your answers on a blog?
awei: that is rarely trafficked
r. yak: as long as my name is not associated
awei: how about "raging yak"?
awei: can i use that?
r. yak: sure

special thanks to raging yak for, yet again, helping me with my homework.

suit yourself: people with style (sam)

this week we decided to feature ordinary people who we think have a great sense of style. as austin mentioned in his last blog entry, fashion is fluid. take, for instance, a simple t-shirt and a pair of jeans - one person might wear it with a pair of fabulous shoes, another might adorn it with whimsical earrings, and yet another drape it with a luxe coat. fashion allows people to play it up or dress it down however they see fit. what were our criteria to “people with style”?
  • people who don’t follow trends, but follow their style instinct
  • people who have the ability to make any outfit their own
  • people who influence us to push our own fashion boundaries
here’s my pick: may yoon

fiona ip and may yoon

eclectic and daring: these are the two words that come to mind when i think of may ’s sense of style. may has an offbeat chic-ness, mixing a range of designers with cute accessories: a vintage clutch, a long, gold locket, or a cool newsboy cap. fiona ip, her wellesley college friend, says, “some friends are like that. they make it so effortless. it’s like, how do you look so cool? may is not afraid to stand out with colors, patterns, and accessories.” needless to say, her fashion choices are always eye-catching, head-turning, and inspiring.

sam: define your personal style

may: comfort is key. i got used to traveling in europe where it's essential to not only look good, but, also, be prepared to walk around all day. i like big chunky accessories and patterns/colors. my friends often pick out things and say, "that's very mayberry" – which i guess would incorporate any of the following: big patterns, bold colors, flowers, vintage bags & shoes, gold, lace... i'm a typical gemini with a dichotomous style - i often mix something very big and bold with something delicate and feminine.

sam: what’s the coolest thing you own in your closet?

may: my favorite items are my accessories...tough to choose just one, though. i would have to say it's a close call between my brown stockings with tiny little hearts all over them and a pair of knee high military boots from greece.

perfectly accessorized in budapest

sam: what/who inspires you? why?

may: celebrity wise, i love cameron diaz's style--she's unique and playful but can pull off any look. i am also inspired by and have great respect for people who can come out dressed head to toe from target and look better than someone who spent an arm and a leg at bergdorf. you have to know yourself and know what works for you in order to do that well. personally, i love finding beautiful things in unexpected places. some of my best items were purchased on the streets or from independent designers. mostly, i love collecting clothing/accessories during my travels because that's really the only way you can create your own, personal look.

sam: what is your worst-ever fashion-faux pas?

may: wearing nylons with open-toed sandals. or tight pants with a “vpl”(visible panty line).

sam: what would you never be caught wearing?

may: something that is clearly way too small.

sam: how would you wear a button-down dress shirt?
may: over black 3/4 length leggings with a red snake-skin leather belt, black booties, and gold bangles.
