Kicking Off the Season with Johnny Hekker

Football is finally back! We're celebrating the new NFL season with Pro Bowl punter and St. Louis Rams player, Johnny Hekker. Although he's best known for his boot (and sometimes for his arm), he's also knowledgeable when it comes to men's fashion and never misses an opportunity to get dressed up. During our consultations together, we learned a few things about Johnny and his off-the-field style. He prefers slim-fitting garments. He adores his Boxer puppy, Nellie. And, when returns home to Seattle, he never misses a chance to enjoy a delicious dim sum meal.

Name: Johnny

Age: 24

Hometown: Seattle, WA

Current Residence: St. Louis, MO

Occupation: Punter

9tailors Client Since: May 2014

Why Choose Custom?

I chose custom because I have a unique body style that has a hard time fitting properly in manufactured suits. I also enjoy a nice, fitted look that is tight in the right areas and allows freedom and movement. I also love getting to have a say in colors, patterns, and other details that make a suit unique.

How Difficult Is It To Find Garments For Your Specific Needs & Style?

It is very difficult to find garments that fit as desired because I have very long arms and bigger legs from kicking. This makes for a tough decision as to which items going to fit properly.

What Inspires Your Style?

I would say I am inspired by simple looks that have hidden gems of personal touch. I love the look of fitted suits and the sleek style of Bradley Cooper, if I had to pick a celebrity look-a-like.

What Is Your Favorite Piece from 9tailors?

I enjoy my blue suit with paisley lining.

How Would You Advise Fellow NFL Players?

I would advise other NFL players that a great custom suit doesn't have to break your bank. With 9tailors, I was in complete control of the look and styling of my suit and I was blown away with the quality and value for what I paid. Having an individual and self expressive suit goes a long way to building the confidence needed for game day.

Although we support our hometown Patriots, Johnny has gingerly (pun intended) swooped into and melted our hearts.

An End of Work Day Thought, Last Minute Details

You're day is almost over and you're thinking about going home or getting food. You're not going to have to think about work until either after dinner or when your alarm goes off tomorrow morning. If you hit that snooze button too many times, you're going to end up running out the door to catch the T that closes its door as soon as you step onto the platform. Chances are, you grabbed the first thing you saw and threw it on - but what if it's the same suit you wore yesterday?! You have to make it look different and distract people from noticing and if you're lucky enough, it's a gray suit that everyone has.

Possible solutions to having to wear the same suit 2 days in a row
  • Wear a *noticeably different shirt. If you wore white, wear color. If you wore color, wear a pattern or white.
  • Add, subtract or change accessories  (throw in a pocket square, wear a bow tie instead of a tie)
Ultimately, your goal is to put together a last minute outfit that no one will notice is the main pieces are the same as the previous day - it's all about drawing attention to the details instead of the whole generic suit.
-And don't forget, you can always mix and match or wear your suit as separates

1 Suit, 3 Outfits
Source: GQ

This Spring season is all about blue. We have seen a decent amount of blue suits come in with more on the way but if you're not ready for a full blue suit (not navy - blue), then use a pocket square or tie to stay up to date and keep your suits from looking stale.

If blue is still too much for you, there's always the classic white pocket square. There are ways to play around with that, too though, so don't count it out all together as 'too basic'. A linen pocket square will keep things casual while a silk pocket square will nod to an elegant gentleman. A silk pocket square with a contrasting trim will say you pay attention to detail and don't need excess flash to put your look together, you know what you're doing. And last but not least, a white on white pattern - my personal favorites. The subtle details aren't noticed from a far but when you're up close and talking to someone, their eye will be drawn to the your pocket square as it breaks up the monochromatic suit but be pleasantly surprised by the hidden-in-plain-sight polka dots.

Don't forget, We're having our accessories sale this month! Get them while they're in stock otherwise they go back up to full price.

Another Glimpse at a Client's Beautiful Wedding, Featuring our Bride-Groom, Tanya Cashorali

It's a rare occasion when we are granted full access to a client's wedding album rather than a few picked images. When we get to look through all of the pictures, we get to experience their wedding on a different level. Aside from being able to dress them and seeing the traditional group shots of the wedding parties, we get to see the ceremony and reception, the details of the reception and the progression of the night.

One of our lovely, lovely clients has granted us this gracious access, Tanya Cashorali. Please enjoy a glimpse of her matrimonial day with her partner, Stephanie, as much as I did.

Spring Collection featuring Her

Technology is advancing at a greater pace than we have ever thought was actually possible. Sure, we imagined it and expected to go faster if anything given our predictions for what the year 2010 was supposed to look like from movies made in the 1970's and 1980's. But realistically? We can only expect so much to happen at once or really, we can only expect so much to be released on the open market. Otherwise, I think we're catching up to our fantasies and science fiction stories at an alarming rate.

Generations are being raised on i-pads and smart phones. We live on our phones. We are lost if we can't find our phone, forget it at home or god forbid - the battery dies and we don't have a charger with us or even more tormenting, no outlet. We socialize with each other in person while keeping our eyes on our miniature screen and barely put it down; whether it work, social media (not actually socializing with other people, but networking) or just playing candy crush, the large majority of us don't know how to be present.

source: 2.bp.blogpsot

Her is a beautiful movie by Spike Jonze about socially reconnecting ... with an IOS system. But nonetheless, Joaquin Pheonix's character, Theodore, learns how to love again and how to emotionally reconnect, eventually, with another person and how to get himself out of his own funk.

For the put together guy who finds freedom with technological growth and keeping up to date with the latest gadgets, we give you, our outfit inspired by Theodore from Her.
A laid back but tailored linen jacket keeps things casual but put together when you're out and about. You may not have to wear a wool suit to the office everyday but you don't want to look like you just rolled out of bed. The colored cotton pants keeps the outfit lively with fun socks to match and play on subtle details, like the purple stripes in your custom shirt. The custom shirt has two chest pockets for your phone (where Theodore keeps his) or business cards, ready for you to connect with anyone at the local coffee shop or wifi bar. The shirt also features a special button down that I have yet to see anywhere else. Photos to follow in a few weeks.

Interested in a casually tailored garment like a blazer or just pants for the warmer seasons? Want to have brighter colors and start exploring away from the ordinary navy's and gray's? Want a different kind of collar like the 'batman' collar or want to even know what a 'batman' collar is and how many different ways we can button down the collar? Contact us at info@9tailors.com!

Congratulations to Our Beautiful Bride Clients, Dana & Alexis!

Women wearing menswear inspired fashion has always been a trend, it comes and goes every year, highlighting different aspects. Some designers focus on an over-sized blazer, others like the look classic look of a white button down with tailored pants, other designers don't even consider the suits and just go for the military inspired pea coats. For this blog post, we are showing you how two of our beautiful brides went for menswear attire for their nuptials instead of just one of them wearing a suit and the other wearing a dress.

Meet our Beautiful Brides, Dana Lyford & Alexis Schuette

Dana Lyford in her custom wedding vest and custom pants.

Name: Dana Lyford

Age: 27

Wedding Date: October 5, 2013

Current Residence: Newton, MA

Occupation: Non-Profit Operations

How Long Have You Been a 9tailors Client? 8 Months

Why Choose Custom?
Alexis and I chose to go the custom route after realizing how difficult it was to find affordable formal wear for women who don't necessarily fit into typical gender norms. The menswear you can find in stores wouldn't quite fit our feminine shapes, so we decided custom was the way to go. We had read good things about 9tailors and loved that the office was full of women who would understand that our bodies weren't shaped like men!

What Was Your Favorite Memory From Your Wedding Day?
My favorite memory from our wedding day has to be that amazing feeling when you first get intorduced as a married couple and walk into the reception to every person that you love cheering for you. That feeling was so intoxicating, I think it will always be my favorite memory!

Describe Your Wedding Style
I feel like this is a little tough to explain because our wedding was very non-traditional and didn't really have a very intentional style. However, it was just at the beginning of Fall and we decided to really let the season be our theme. So, everything was very Autumnal and outdoorsy.

Our loving brides in their custom wedding suits. Each suit tailored to their specific curves and needs to make them look their best and just the way they envisioned on their Autumn wedding day.

What's Your Best Style Advice to "Grooms"?
Ha, well I'll take give my best advice to fellow gay ladies who are considering a custom suit! Don't hesitate to go the custom route, it's worth every dollar to be 100% comfortable on your wedding day. Don't worry about what a traditional suit looks like and try to make yourself look the way you think you should. Look the way you want and just be yourself! And when it's all said and done, get yourself some sexy shoes to compliment your suit!

It was such an exciting process to work with these two beautiful ladies. We love it when women come in looking for a menswear style suit and are able to add their feminine charm to it! If you want to know how to make a custom men's suit into a woman's menswear-inspired garment, contact a style consultant at info@9tailors.com. We love our bride-groom couples!

March Madness is About to Begin with Our Client, Dana Ford

When thinking about athletes and fashion, you think the latest active wear from Nike and Under Armour and advertisements with gatorade coming out of their pores as sweat. They live and breathe these products and garments. But what about when they're not being active? Serena Williams was one of the first to push the relationship between fashion and professional sports on the tennis court. People started paying attention to what athletes wore during the game instead of just how they dressed off the courts.

However, college basketball has always required their coaches to wear suits. The sharper you're dressed, the greater presence you hold on the court and the more respect is demanded for you and your team. While coaching is absolutely the #1 priority for coaches, a well fitted suit that makes a statement comes second.

March Madness is about to begin in a couple of weeks, round 1 is on March 18th. It is a time for betting and being glued to the T.V in sports bars rooting for your old colleges. It is also a time to keep an eye on the coaches and how they present themselves. They know this is the season to bring out their best suits and put on their game faces because if their team goes down, so does their wardrobe. The fashion during March Madness is understatedly important that Esquire has even done reviews of the best and worst dressed coaches.

Meet our Client, Santi of The Bad Rabbits

We love interacting with our clients past the initial consultation. It's important to us to build relationships with the gentlemen we work with. It's great that you get the suit you're looking for but we want you to walk out with an experience. One of our goals is to not only make you feel excited about your wardrobe but feel great about working with us. We have a 100% satisfaction guarantee policy that extends to our customer service in addition to your garments.

Allow me to present you with one of our clients, a member of the Bad Rabbits, Santi.

Meet Santi, a slick guitarist with a classic, clean sense of style. When we met Santi, we discussed his fashion and fit preferences to assess how best to integrate his individual taste into his 9tailors items. The result? We based the design off the svelte suits of Don Draper, and edged up the classic slim fit with a new pant pocket style and the jacket's velvet bottom lapel. Seen above, this guy pulls off "gentleman" flawlessly.

Age: 30
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
Current residence: New York, NY
Occupation: Musician

How long have you been a 9tailors client?
"Five months."

Why choose custom?
"I wanted to sit with 9tailors and design something based on my own specific style and incorporate my ideas, as well as use their knowledge and expertise to help guide me and spark ideas for the custom suit I ordered."

What/who inspires your style? Why?
"Classic, classy and well fitting. I like to find garments that fit your own unique body form and highlight the strong attributes you have. You don't want to bite someone else's style because they are not you and things don't fit on them the same as you."

What is your favorite piece from 9tailors?
"My custom suit jacket is my favorite piece. The velvet lapels add a great touch and make it a unique jacket. The fit is great and the material just works with the whole thing."

How difficult is it to find garments that targets your specific needs and style?

"I find it difficult to get something that is specifically you, simply because garments aren't designed with your own style in mind. You may find a lot of things out there that you like, but nothing that is specific to you."

What would be your style advice to other men in your professional field?
"Define your style, embrace it and stay inspired."

We couldn't agree more!

The Holiday Season is Officially Over and so is Engagement Season!

Valentine's Day is over, marking the end of the holiday season which somewhere along the way, turned into proposal season. Holiday season used to equate to spending, gift giving, stuffing your faces and making resolutions that will end before the season does. Now, it's also been marked as proposal season. Facebook news feeds are flooded with lifetime events of getting engaged, commercials are all about jewelry and plans are made months in advance for how you're going to 'pop the question'.

source: reddit

I love working with wedding parties. It is exciting to see what everyone is doing to make their day special and impressive to see how far in advance they're getting their suits done, usually it's towards the end of the list. Men are stepping up their game a year in advance and getting their fittings done around the time the bride has picked out her dress. With that said, the holiday season should not become engagement season. It takes away the surprise and puts too much pressure on whomever is proposing to make it extra special and stand out from the rest of the glittering lights in the snow.

The most common reactions are drinking a bottle of wine before logging onto facebook or just deleting facebook all together. In contrast, some brides prefer not to have their engagement occur during the holidays. It sets up failure for next year's holiday gift, what can be better than getting engaged?

Unless the date or time of year is actually special to you and your significant other, there should not be additional pressure to put a ring on it. Propose because it's the right time, not just because it's 'that time of year'.

If you participated in engagement season, then you should keep in mind that a lot of other people did, too. Meaning, you have to start looking at venues, photographers and wedding planners sooner than later. Let the catch up game, begin!

Mystery Married Style Consultant Revealed!

Tomorrow night is the night for first loves, long loves and those awkward ones where you don't want to call them your love, but you have romantic feelings for that person you've been hanging out with, but are unsure of how they feel. So, you just kind of like them... and hope they like you back.

source: Emily McDowell

So rare are the days where you get it right on your first try and don't need to learn the rules or games of the dating world. Luckily, there are still modern love stories that are reminiscent of past times with love at first sight and no awkward exes.

Meet our beloved Style Consultant and Alterations Manager, Karly.
A sweetheart from the South with a romantic love story to match the tender love that is associated with a Southern Gentleman.

Her Love Story:

It was her Junior year in High School when Karly began working at the local coffee shop, Convenant Coffee. Her days were filled with making caramel mochas and peanut butter mochas, better than any other place around. A fun after school job with her fellow co-worker, Shane. Shane didn't go to the same high school as Karly and only talked during work while serving strawberry and cream cheese croissants. Karly had a crush on Shane, but didn't know how he felt about her. So, she never made a move.

Her crush became dormant as she went to college in Nebraska and he remained in North Carolina for his studies. Little did they know, they thought of each other.

Thank goodness for Thanksgiving and being home for the holidays. All was not lost. Shane asked Karly out over the long weekend and began a long distance relationship by the time Christmas came. After her first year away in Nebraska, she transferred colleges back to North Carolina. Home is where the hear is. Karly knew he was the one once they were together again.

Shane designed Karly's engagement ring. He carved it out of wax and had it casted before popping the question.

His Proposal:
"He's a little bit of a joker. I was kind of expecting it but didn't know when. Of course, he wanted it to be a surprise. We went out to dinner as a week late birthday dinner for me. We went to the restaurant where we had our first date in downtown Charlotte. When we got to downtown, there was a really big 7 - 10 story parking deck. There are spots everywhere but he continues to go up to the roof deck and then we have to go all the way down for dinner. There was no one else for the top 7 stories, it was completely desolate. After dinner we walk around and I'm wondering if he was trying to lead me somewhere. But it begins to rain. So, we go back to the car. We get to the car and tries to start it but it won't start. I thought he was joking but it really wasn't starting. He went to the front of the car, under the hood to check the engine. He sends me to the driver seat to try starting it again and still nothing. He has me come around to the front of the car to help him. So, I walk over to look under the hood and then he got down on one knee.

He set up the whole thing. He pulled something out to prevent it from starting so I could help him with the engine and just put it back in afterwards so we could get out of the rain. He had a cheesy song mix prepared for our ride back. Everything was wedding related, it was really funny. Some of the stuff was really nice but then there were some horribly corny ones"

Shane and Karly's Wedding Picture

It only took Shane two years to propose with a walk down the aisle eight months later! By this coming May, they will have been married for a solid four years.

Their Secret:
Karly and Shane have similar personalities and balance each other out in different ways. Also, they are both really creative. They like to make their gifts for one another instead of defaulting to buying something. It keeps them constantly thinking of one another and new ways to keep things exciting.

And they're living happily ever after...

10 Looks We LOVE to See on Men

Valentine's Day is just at the end of this week and the pressure is building. If you don't have a date yet, there's still time to impress that special someone you have your eye on. We have put together a list of items that we love to see gentlemen in. We can't help but do a double take.

Sweater With a Quarter Zipper
It's not something the average guy thinks to get but it gives a polished, mature look. It says, "I'm grown-up and my mother doesn't dress me" - Alex, Style Consultant and Studio Manager

A Well Fitted Button Down With Jeans
It's comfortable and approachable. You're put together without going overboard. - Karly, Style Consultant
Etro, source: nordstrom

Blazer
A blazer just makes just about anything sophisticated.

Look 1: Pair a blazer with a button down and jeans gives the wearer a cool and collected look. It's a man who means business but still knows how to relax and not take everything too seriously. How does your heart not throb while looking at Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto? Aside from them being them, their looks are effortless.
Chris Pine & Zachary Quinto, source: gq
Look 2: Throwing the blazer on over the jean jacket not only makes everything seem more put together but also gives the blazer an air of edge. It says, you care about how you look but you don't need to follow all of the rules. You decide what looks good on you, not the fashion spreads. The accessories don't hurt either, the pocket square keeps the sophistication of the blazer, balancing the formal look with the uber casual look.

source: istreetfashion

Patterns
A man who wears patterns just says "fun".

Look 1: Plaid. Who doesn't love a man in plaid? The pattern exudes masculinity without carrying an ax around in the woods with a full beard. Cultural influences has lead us to believe a man in plaid knows how to take care of himself and his environment.

Ryan Gosling, source: totalfilmmag
Look 2: Mixing Patterns. A man who has taken the time to coordinate patterns into his wardrobe pays attention to details. It is bold and difficult to do but extremely attractive when it is well done. It says, not only do you like to have fun, but you know how to fun without going crazy or getting into trouble.

Vests With a Button Down
Not many men wear vests so it's always something special to see one. It's dressing nicely without going too formal and looking strictly business. It's gives an air of comfort and makes the wearer look distinguished.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, source:gq

Crew Neck Sweaters
After all of the plunging v-necks men have been wearing of the past few years, it's nice to return to the classic crew neck sweater. It can be dressed up with a button down underneath it or kept casual with jeans or corduroys. It's a staple in a man's closet (or it should) and nice to see someone so at ease. As much as we love men taking more care in what they wear and paying attention to suit details and pocket squares, they need to have a complimenting casual closet, too. A man who dresses up all the time can come off as being stuffy. A well balanced closet is always best.

source: new york times

Leather
Leather is another look that speaks to masculinity, jackets, bags and shoes. A leather jacket gives a man a 'bad boy' look automatically. Enough said.
Chris Hemsworth, source: itsmusicfashionlife

Bow Ties
It's an accessory not every man will venture into. Learning how to tie a bow tie can be frustrating. Learning how to pair it with your everyday wardrobe instead of just wearing it for formal occasions can be daunting. Finding the fun patterns is fun but then matching that up with a shirt you already own instead of buying a new one, that can be just as confusing. However, when a man learns how to wear and tie a bow tie, you know he's a grown-up and not afraid of challenges. *Clip-on ties don't count.

Pharrell Williams wearing a bow tie and a leather jacket, an irresistible combination. source: papermag

If these looks don't work for you - a good rule of them is to have an approachable put together look.

February is Here! You Know What That Means..

Ah Valentines Day. The day where you are either in a panic in what to get for your significant other or you just use as an excuse to eat chocolates. But what about yourself? Why not treat yourself to a little extra love? Our expert style consultants aide you in achieving the look your going for with the desired colors and details. We ensure your look doesn't go overboard and keeping a balanced overall look.

Start with the basics - White Shirts
A well fitting basic white shirt is something every man should have in his closet. It goes with everything and instantly cleans up your look. Keep it from being too plain by adding touches of color or pattern.

9tailors Custom White Shirts, center shirt with contrast inner color and monogram. 9tailors knotted cuff links framing the shirts with a Jegman tie.

Dress Your Blazer or Suit with a Pocket Square
Don't leave your suit looking bare and naked, bring it to life with a touch of color or pattern. Pocket squares break up full suits, keeping it from looking too plain or overwhelmingly-ordinary. If you are wearing a traditional gray or navy suit, a pocket square is the perfect way to subtly bring your suit to life without wearing a loud tie or shirt. Its the right amount of effort and sophistication that says "I know what I'm doing, while looking good doing it".

Mix It Up with Colored and Patterned Shirts
If this is new territory for you, start off with a check or plaid shirt. They are different from the ordinary stripped shirts that you see everywhere and add a little bit more life to it with more color and design. They pair really well with casual blazers or making a suit a bit more fashion forward.

If you're not one for patterns, there's always the solid colored shirts that isn't your traditional blue. Try something bolder or with tiny patterns that aren't noticeable until standing closely by...which is what you want anyways. And don't forget, no one ever looks bad with a bow tie, especially ones with bicycles on it.
