Our Custom Winter Coat Collection is Here! Meet the Style Consultants Behind It, Ellen & Alex

Baby, it's snowing outside and Mother Nature has stopped gifting and confusing us with random warm days. Winter is here with snow and holiday cheer! Bundle up with layers and winter outerwear without looking like a giant marshmallow.

Our Men's Outerwear Collection will keep you looking like a sophisticated adult while keeping you warm, and as always, is entirely custom-made to your personality. 

The collection was put together by two of our style consultants, Ellen and Alex. They each played a large role in deciding the customized details, what parts of the coats can be customized and putting together the beautiful samples you see in our studio. With three different samples available for viewing pleasures and trying-on purposes, you can decide if you'd like a casual coat, an every day work coat or a formal coat for your black tie events.

Alex, Studio Manager & Style Consultant. 

Hailing from New Hampshire, Alex travels down to the city of Boston on a weekly basis for the love of 9tailors - and her clients ;) You know who you are. Her affair with the company started three years ago after graduating from Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a Fashion Degree, so you know you're in good hands. 

She continues her passion in her free time and for 9tailors. As studio manager, Alex ensures all of the orders goes smoothly and in a timely fashion, she keeps the wheels well oiled. She chose the fabric and designs for each of the sample coats in our studio. Alex picked all of the fabrics for the samples with the brown coat as her favorite. She loves the casual color mixed with the traditional tailored look and length giving it a perfect balance for every day wear.

Ellen, Style Consultant. 

Ellen one of the fresher faces in the studio but you wouldn't know it working with her. She's a fast learner and keeps on her toes, ready to guide you through your fittings and appointments. She's always ready to go as a true jet setter at heart, Ellen enjoys running out of the country at least once a year to satisfy her quench. 

Ellen played a large role in designing the details for our winter coat collection. Keeping in mind traditional styles, she opted for long lasting details to match up with our lasting quality. These coats aren't going to go out of style and will be personalized to you from fabric choice, contrasting details to length and fit; no two will ever be alike, much like our suits. 

Ellen's favorite pick is the paid peacoat. The plaid pattern catches her heart as a playfulness that matches with her personality. The military details keep the coat contemporary and less conservative with the contrasting color, pairing especially well with the bow tie. Although bow ties are more traditional, they are now seen as contemporary. Neck ties have been in mainstream work and play wear for the past few decades making them the "norm". It takes a special kind of man and skill to not only pull of a bow tie but also know how to tie a bow tie, especially when the bow tie has pigs on it.

How to: Look Hot and Keep Warm

So, this week is frigid, right? How about this morning? It feels like the cold seeps into your bone marrow and just permeates throughout your body until you get indoors. Don't have gloves? Fuggedaboutit. Your hands are so numb that it's actually a concerted effort to do everyday things like open doors, hail a cab, send a text, make a call. Jam them digits in your pockets and sparingly remove only when necessary—red, frostbitten fingers kinda hurt and take time to thaw out.

It's fairly serious when even newscasters are cautioning you not to go outside unless absolutely necessary, as has been customary of our local channels this week. And let's face it, gentlemen, a suit and overcoat can only offer so much warmth. To help keep you bundled, we recommend the following rules:

LAYER IT UP. Why not wear a cardigan under your jacket or blazer and over your shirt? Tuck the tie in and you actually look quite nice, handsome even. It's also office appropriate for those of you in a more professional dress code setting. Wear the jacket to the meetings with your higher-up executives and clients, slip it off when you're roaming around with co-workers. And what's more? People have been rocking this preppy look all over the place lately. Our contention? Looks hot and keeps you warm.

INVEST IN A SCARF. I know, some of you think scarves are lame or unnecessary. And if you aren't from New England or have never experienced a winter in MA, you may not understand the benefits of scarves. They work well at keeping your neck and ears warm, say, if you don't want to mess with your 'do, yo. Hats will ruin a nice hair cut, so why not wrap a scarf around yourself and protect your ears from the harsh winds? Or, get some ear muffs. If you are into scarves, we applaud you for being stylish and smart. Looks hot and keeps you warm.

GET A HAT, SON. If you aren't worried about your hair, then the best defense against the cold is a hat. Enough said. The right hat? We leave it up to you and your steez, whatever looks hot and keeps you warm.

How far would you go to protect your shoes?

When it comes to fashion there is a thin line between function and vanity.  Keeping your beautiful leather shoes in top notch condition during the harsh Northeast winters takes a bit of planning.  Some men simply thrash their shoes expecting to get only one season from them while others trek through the snow in boots to switch into their Italian made loafers at work. Although, there is an oft missed third option- galoshes!

So, gentleman, what will it be?  Modern galoshes or the extra pair of boots for your commute?

Seasonal trend: Turtlenecks with Blazers

The idea of wearing turtlenecks under blazers might remind you of Ron Burgundy holding a glass of scotch. The key to pulling this look off (without looking like a 70's news anchor) is finding the right textures and colors to match your blazer.

For a more casual look, solid colored turtlenecks with a nice textured pattern (e.g. cable-knit sweaters) pair well with a fitted blazer.


For a sleeker look, a cashmere turtleneck will go nicely with a buttoned double-breasted suit jacket, as styled below by Mattias Karlsson. Photo by Daniel Jackson.


The only problem you'll run into is finding a flattering turtleneck. The fabric you choose, the way it conforms to your body, and the way it frames your face should be considered when dressing in a turtleneck.
