Happy New Year! Spring 2014 Trend Report- PRINTS!

You know the cliches, out with the old and in with the new. Fashion has a non-stop revolving door of trends from season to season. Whether or not you decide to jump on board ahead of schedule or mid-game, it's good for you to have an idea of what you're jumping into.

For the month of January, every Tuesday will spotlight an upcoming trend for men's suits. Until then, enjoy other menswear trends for Spring 2014. 

There are multiple patterns to pick from to find the one best suits your fancy:

FLORAL
Embrace elegance this upcoming season and mix it with structured clothes to keep a masculine edge. 

                           

 ARMY PRINT
This trend has come and gone and at this point, is becoming a classic, just be sure not to go too crazy with the camouflage like in the 90s. Use this more of an accent or a single piece, don't cover yourself from head to toe in pink, purple, blue, green and brown army print.

POLKA DOTS

I love polka dots! I'm very excited about this trend and am anxious to see this on men. They're playful enough to have limited rules about the scale and all over prints but is best to one piece.

Meet Patrick: "Dress to Fit the Setting"

Whenever Patrick visits the 9tailors studio, the good-natured gent is always clothed well. As he discusses below, he's not one for under-dressing nor over-dressing, but he has a intuitive knack for looking the part and getting it right.

A linen sports coat and cotton pants are must-haves for Spring and Summer: they're lightweight, fashionable, and follow trend without overdoing it. Patrick's light blue blazer has a half self-lining, an option we at 9tailors especially recommend for summer style. Don't be scared of linen and cotton because they wrinkle easily! Why choose custom?

I don't exactly have the "off the rack" body type. I like to have everything just the right length. I would end up getting everything I bought tailored anyway, so getting things custom-made makes sense for me.

What/who inspires your style? Why?

I wouldn't say something or someone specific inspires my style but I like to dress to fit the setting. I generally get ideas in magazines or online. There are definitely certain stores sites that I look at frequently.

What is your favorite piece from 9tailors?

I like them all but I probably wear my blue gingham shirt with the pink color inlay the most.

What would be your style advice to other men in your professional field?
I'm not a big fan of business casual but I understand that it is pretty much the norm now. I would say leave the polo shirts for the golf course and barbeques and wear button-down shirts to the workplace. Always have a blazer or suit coat with you, as well.

Seasonal trend: Turtlenecks with Blazers

The idea of wearing turtlenecks under blazers might remind you of Ron Burgundy holding a glass of scotch. The key to pulling this look off (without looking like a 70's news anchor) is finding the right textures and colors to match your blazer.

For a more casual look, solid colored turtlenecks with a nice textured pattern (e.g. cable-knit sweaters) pair well with a fitted blazer.

The only problem you'll run into is finding a flattering turtleneck. The fabric you choose, the way it conforms to your body, and the way it frames your face should be considered when dressing in a turtleneck.

Since the majority of our clients will be busy with copious amounts food and football this coming Thursday, we decided we would do the same. This coming Thursday and Friday (24 & 25) the studio will be closed in honor of the greatest meal of the year.

Although, if you happen to come out of your food coma by Saturday we will be open for business over the weekend to get those last minute holiday outfits designed and ordered.

Wrongly Accused? Boston as America's Worst Dressed City.

Well fellow Bostonians, here we are, #1 again. If the Bruin's latest victory wasn't enough, we are once again on top. But this time it's based on whats at the bottom of the barrel. Elected the worst dressed city in America, this isn't the top spot any city wants to hold.

Is it deserved? Or, is this a jab from a New York based publication (a small outfit that goes by the name GQ) that only serves the biased agenda of our greatest rival? One thing is for certain, none of our clients are contributing to the problem.

The piece, by GQ, does provide one out for this great city by acknowledging that a large portion of the population is composed of undergraduates that continuously don their leggings as pants, hoodies as formal outerwear, and uggs as fashionable footwear.

This should not be held against the population at large but another acute observation should be taken to heart, "'But Boston is the epicenter of prep style!,' you say? That's true, but it's with a little extra that ends up ruining everything: Khakis!—with pleats. Boat shoes!—with socks. Knit ties!—actually, no one in Boston seems to have ever seen one of these."

How To: Layer

Yesterday's post touched on layering, but since its the most practical way of dressing in the coming weeks, it deserves a little more attention. Layering is something of an art and can easily turn ugly if not approached properly. Lets start with the obvious; stick with colors in the same family, thinner layers first, avoid over-sized clothing, and bulkier layers on top.

Here are some ways to put together a casual Friday look for the office. Pair it with some chinos or textured wool slacks and a nice pair of lace ups. Add a pocket square with a bold print to get some more color in there. Printed scarfs are an alternative to rescue a controlled color scheme from becoming bland.

Now for the weekend. Try a track jacket with a vest underneath. Or try a hoodie under a leather jacket. With both looks you can add a colorful belt and a t-shirt with your favorite band on it for an infusion of personality.

1. Unless absolutely necessary (like the Oscar photo above), skip the tie. He has mastered the unbuttoned look. Unbuttoning the collar button and one after can create added sex appeal, any more than that and you're testing dangerous ground.

2. Opt for a simple silhouette. It's all in the fit. He wears his clothes without being dominated by them. Strive for style rather than trends to keep your look timeless.

3. Choose colors and cuts that flatter you. He avoids colors that don't suit him and consistently wears suits that fit him.
