Spring/Summer Trend Alert: Thick-rimmed Glasses

Do you sport spectacles? Perhaps you fancy yourself donning a monocle, a la Mr. Peanut?
Courtesy of Planter's Peanuts
Whether your vision is slightly impaired and you require glasses or you're just trying to pull off geek chic, snag yourself a pair of thick-rimmed glasses this season. Even The Today Show  recently suggested the accessory as a must-have. An avid glasses-wearer myself (I can't see far away, rendering me hopelessly near-sighted), I fully endorse and support this trend (I'm a Lisa Loeb, cat-eyed or squared glasses gal the past 10+ years).

Glasses are an added detail that can completely change a look. Some people may not even recognize you with specs on! A monocle is seemingly all the rage right now, too, believe it or not. Ask Warby Parker.

Say goodbye to your wireless-framed eye-wear and embrace the dark, thick frames your inner nerd has always wanted to wear! And if you don't need glasses, you can still pretend you do... non-prescription frames give an otherwise preppy style that extra oomph of geek chic, read: Buddy Holly. I only ask that if you're going to pretend you need glasses, don't wear frames without lenses. This is absurd and a look I can't get behind. Places like Warby Parker and Moscot house amazing vintage-inspired finds for eye-wear but even Lenscrafters has some great options to choose from their "retro cool" collection. Check out this how to wear nerd glasses article and see what a-dork-able frames fit your persona.

Shades of Gray

As style consultants, we are always asked about color choice for suits. This is often the most daunting decision for our clients as the plethora of fabrics we offer is overwhelming to some. Color is a subjective preference for most, but there are a few unspoken guidelines when it comes to choosing the right hue for you.

GRAY

From the Pee Wee Herman light gray to the darker charcoal grays, if you don't own a gray suit yet and you're a frequent suit-wearing fella, you need to get yourself one pronto! Gray is the most versatile color for a suit as it pairs with nearly every color on the spectrum.  You can wear both blacks and browns (shoes, belts) with gray and it's also acceptable in both formal and casual settings.

With gray, you have warmer tones and cooler tones. The warmer tones have a bit of a taupe-ish hue to them, whereas the cooler tones exude a blue-ish tint. It's really up to you which way to go here, but it's very helpful to compare the two against each other to help you narrow down your decision.

LIGHT GRAY:

Lighter grays are meant for summer and spring. Do not wear in fall or winter. Weddings are especially popular this time of year, and you can rock a shade like this casually or formally, as long as you have the proper items to accessorize your ensemble.

MEDIUM GRAY:

Grooms visiting the 9tailors studio have been favoring medium grays and this range is the most popular choice among our clients right now. It's less bold than a light gray and a good option for a suit you want to wear year round, depending on brightness.

DARK GRAY:

Charcoal is the name of this game. You can't go wrong with it, in my opinion. As mentioned above, grays go with both black and brown accoutrements, and something about this color screams sexy and sophisticated. This is also a choice you can wear to most events.

It's a Mad, Mad, World...of Mad Men

Only a few more days until the two-hour premier of the best show on television, Mad Men. 18 months is a long time to wait! Aside from the handsome specimens (men and women alike, hubba hubba) that grace the set of this spectacular series, the intricate wardrobe has caused a welcome resurgence of style over the past few years. Especially in menswear. A style that screams distinguished, classic, timely, sharp, crisp, infinitely cool, and bad. Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning goooooood. A style every man should emulate (as many male 9tailors clients do exceptionally well). Since the beginning of Mad Men, its fashion has been much applauded and praised all over the interwebs. Rightly so! Authenticity is hard to replicate so accurately and precisely. Kudos to the costume designers led by genius Janie Bryant, who nail it every time by conveying character traits through clothing.

Let's take a gander at the top five best Mad Men trends, shall we? From Sterling Cooper to Sterling/Cooper/Draper/Pryce!

1.The Slim Fit Suit. It seems more and more of our clients are going for this streamlined, custom look. When you have a suit that fits your proportions, your physique is elongated and slimmed down. While we prefer a single breasted suit, double breasted can also be worn in a more European, sleek style. We 9tailors ladies also recommend a three-piece ensemble...when you take your jacket off, your look is still pulled together by a complementary vest/waistcoat.

2. Mixed complementary patterns, textures, and tones. There's an art to how you pair patterns and colors. The trick is to use colors and textures that play off one another.

3. Sports coat. GQ mandates all gentlemen acquire a sports jacket this spring. This element easily dresses up a casual look by adding sartorial sophistication. Don Draper wears one when he's kicking it in Cali while some of the younger creatives at Sterling/Cooper/Draper/Pryce wear it for work.

4. Accessories. As in the pictures above and below, you'll often spot signature items like a skinny tie, bowtie, a pocket square, tie pins, or a fedora in every episode. Again, you can wear these things casually or formally. Clutch accessories up the notch of coolness.

5. Tuxedo! It dominated this year's Oscars, proving you just can't go wrong with a classic tuxedo. Everything about it exudes refinement and elegance.

What say you, gentlemen? Feeling an urge to splurge on a new spring trend? How about a crisp white shirt with french cuffs like a Mad man? Email info@9tailors.com and make an appointment to design your custom shirt, tuxedo, sports coat, suiting separates, or slim fit suit today!

Try this Accessory: Knit Ties

If you're a man about town and like to portray yourself as such: you wear the trends before everyone else is rocking it. Or perhaps you're the type of guy who prefers to keep your style all your own: you clad yourself in whatever you deem the hippest, regardless of what's already out there. Or maybe you don't have the slightest idea on how to keep your style fresh: you wear the first clean thing you grab that morning. Whatever the case, you have your girls at 9tailors to keep our fingers on the pulse of what you should be wearing.

An oldie-but-goodie retro item that keeps popping up on our radar? The knit tie. Sure, it had its heyday in the 80's but it's been sneaking back onto the scene for quite some time. And if Goldfinger can sport a silk knit tie, any gentleman with keen aesthetic sense and the right amount of swagger can replicate this style.

Knit ties are lightweight (okay for warmer temps), squared on the bottom, and can be twisted into a small tie-knot, whether you prefer a full windsor or a four-in-hand. Paired with a lightweight cardigan or sports coat, it's an accessory that will surely perk up an ordinary outfit with preppy panache. A great addition to your wardrobe if you're looking to do something subtle and different with your look. GQ heralds the striped knit tie as a must-have this spring.

Check out H&M as well as J. Crew to see their limited selections. And if you know a good knitter, why not see if she can take a stab at one of these bad boys with her knitting needles? After all, choosing a cool pattern for a one-of-a-kind tie will punctuate your custom style.

Have a look in mind that you can't find off-the-rack or need some pointers on how to accessorize an ensemble? Email a style consultant at info@9tailors.com and we'll help guide you through our custom designing process.

These are the Breaks*

If you're a custom clothing aficionado, you understand the importance of the pant break: where your trousers meet your shoes. However, with all of the trends out there, it's hard to know what break will look best. Seemingly, there's either much confusion or not enough attention paid to this integral part of how your suit should fit your proportions. Ultimately, it depends on you and your personal style, but here are some helpful hints to guide your choice.

Too Much
We are here to tell you that too much break is NOT a good look. It comes off as disheveled, sloppy, and glaringly obvious that a visit to the the tailor is required to adjust your pants to proper length. It also singlehandedly defeats the purpose of wearing a suit, especially when you're trying to look dapper.

Courtesy of alibaba.com
Too much break = too much bunching at the bottom. And heaven forbid your pant leg slips past your shoe and you're treading along on top of it—the frayed ends alone should alert you that your pants are far too long.

Too Little
Similarly, too little break isn't a great look either, depending on how one wears it. If a guy has really short hemlines, his pants will look too small for him. Geek Chic is one thing—Revenge of the Nerds is quite another.

When considering the break of your pants, we suggest you adhere to three industry standards to achieve a polished appearance for your body type: the full break, the medium break, or the short break.

The Full Break
Considered by most to be an adventurous and bold trend, this version is for the taller gentlemen as it gives a little more fabric to provide coverage for longer legs. The full break gives the pants a deeper crease along the front and falls right above the sole of your shoe. This prevents the pants from looking too short on a man of higher stature. It still may run the risk of looking a bit too untidy, so proceed with care.

Courtesy of ESPN here

The Medium Break
The most traditional and classic look is the medium break. Known for its conservative style, this is a clean look that cuts right across the top of the shoe and covers a little bit of the laces (if there are any). Men of middle heights wear this look very well, while those on either side of the height scale are better advised to approach with caution. However, the medium break has an angled hem in the back, which allows the pant to be long enough to hit the top of your back sole and shorter in front to reveal some dress shoe, which looks presentable on most men.

The Short Break
For the trendsetters who keep a watchful eye on the runway, this is a look that you know well as more and more designers consider this a style standard. The short break is generally a higher hem that gives little, if only barely, a crease to the pant leg and hits just below the top of your shoe front (a la Thom Browne). Some refer to this as a "high water" pant, as it can show a bit of ankle. Any body type that wants to make a statement can pull this off, but it's generally delineated to more slender gentlemen. Not meant for those who are weary to reveal some ankle.

Courtesy of Mens's Health
Cuffed? Rolled?
As for cuffing or rolling your pants: we leave this up to you. The trick here is not too much roll and not too much ankle, and it's usually done with denim, but it's a fashion-forward look worth mentioning.

Courtesy of GQ
Those who don this look have guts. If you love it, go for it! If you hate it, better leave it be. The most important thing about wearing a look well is how comfortable you feel.

Still unsure what pant break you favor the most, or which one will accommodate your personal style? Email a style consultant at info@9tailors.com for some sage advice on pant styles and lengths, or make an appointment to custom-design the look you crave.

The Ins and Outs of Showing Cuff

With so many different opinions about showing cuff I thought it would be helpful to break down the different options as well as the look it reflects. A few months ago the three different fits offered at 9tailors were discussed. In general, but by no means is it a hard and fast rule, men tend to keep their cuff in line with the fit of the suit.

For a roomier cut, such as the American fit, it would be appropriate to have the entirety of your cuff covered by the jacket, leaving no cuff exposed. Although, some men with a slimmer fit also prefer to show no cuff at all.

No cuff exposed.
For a European cut most men are comfortable with roughly .25" to .5" of cuff showing. This is probably the most popular style choice as it looks balanced with most fits.

A half inch of cuff exposed.

Following with the trend some men, usually with a skinny cut suit, show up to 1" of cuff. Any more cuff than this showing- especially when one's arms are down- tends to throw off the proportions of the jacket.

One inch of cuff exposed.
How much cuff do you show?  Want a second opinion?  Make an appointment with a style consultant today who can help you navigate the tricky world of suit sleeves.  Send us an email at info@9tailors.com to have your conundrum settled once and for all!
