Congratulations to Phil and Matt - Dashing grooms in tweed

We love weddings, large and small. We had the chance to work with a very lovely couple, Phil and Matt several months ago on their intimate wedding in Boston.

Both work in creative industries, so they wanted their wedding attire to be unique, yet classic. When they decided upon two complementary gray tweed blazers with matching contrasts, we were beyond thrilled! When the blazers arrived in the studio and we had posted it online, it set our Facebook feed a blaze with rave reviews!

Matt (left) and Phil (right) in their beautiful custom blazers

Some thoughts from Phil....

Name: Phil

Occupation: Regional Manager

Why did you choose custom? When selecting wardrobe pieces nothing is more luxe than custom made pieces. You and the tailor drive fit, fashion and fabrication, it is the ultimate luxury experience.

What's your best style advice? Less is more, classic is best, don't over think it. A trend is one step away from a fashion don't.

What or who inspires your style? You may laugh but... who was better dressed than Ricky Ricardo. He had amazing style, incredibly masculine yet very classic.

Congratulations again to Matt and Phil!

Need attire for your wedding? E-mail us at info@9tailors.com.

Meet Graham: Bassist for the Bad Rabbits

Meet Graham, an easygoing fella with a knack for old school classic menswear. While brainstorming his 9tailors garments, the Bad Rabbits bassist knew exactly the look he wanted to achieve. We decided to do a double breasted jacket in a brown herringbone to channel a timeless look with mass appeal. Once we decided on the brown fabric, the rest was history. The first time Graham tried everything on, he looked incredible.
How long have you been a 9tailors client?

Age: 31
Hometown: Chappequa, NY
Current residence: New York, NY
Occupation: Musician

"It's really about knowing yourself and what works for you, both physically and in personality. I find it a great challenge to go searching for garments that fit your style."

Why choose custom?
"The attention to detail and the personalized styling makes all the difference. It's the best way to really capture your own unique style."

What/who inspires your style? Why?
"I normally look to other musicians past and present for style points. I think musicians have their own unique way of dressing that if done right really compliments their music and creates an iconic look that defines them and people recognize them by. Some of my style icons in music are Donny Hathaway, Pharrell Williams, Curtis Mayfield, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, Mos Def.

What is your favorite piece from 9tailors?
The double breasted jacket they made for our performance on Jimmy Kimmel. I had never worn a double breasted jacket before, but 9tailors totally sold me on them. It's a classic look and they nailed it with the pinstripes and cut. It was exactly what I had envisioned.

What would be your style advice to other men in your professional field?
"Find a look that suits you and go with it. Try and hone in on it and pick garments that really fit your own personal "brand" rather than going for many different styles."

Word up, Graham! Style is an embodiment of personality and signature.

Peruse the pictures below, courtesy of one of Boston's best (and our favorite) photographers, Channing Johnson.

How To Be An Effortless Gent: Cuffs and Pleats

There is a huge debate out there over cuffs and pleats. However, cuffs and pleats are creeping back into   our wardrobe vernacular after years of discarding them as old-fashioned and dated!

Traditionally, pleated pants have resulted in the troubling condition known as "balloon butt" (extra material gathered around the hip and rear). Cuffs too, have taken a beating as it has tendency to make mens's legs appear shorter.

If you are one those curious types and don't mind diving into this trend, here's how to do the look well.

For cuffed pants:

Photo from Sodahead
  1. Select a slimmer, more tapered trouser. These trousers should fit snugly through the thigh and knee. The hem must have a narrow ankle opening.
  2. Choose the correct length. A cuffed pair of trousers should have no break at all. The trousers should gently skim the bottom of your ankle. Or, if you are extra adventurous, you can go above the ankle. This ensures a clean look. (If you want to don't want to fully commit your suits to cuffs quite yet, try them on your next pair of casual slacks or jeans.)

For Pleated Pants:
Image from Esquire

  1. Pick a petite pleat. Here, bigger is not better. Find a pair with single pleats that are nearly invisible on either side of the trousers. Deep pleats make the pants balloon out.
  2. Go for clean. Overall, the silhouette should be clean and unfussy. Make sure that the pants are slim through the hip.

The effortless gent shouldn't feel compelled to do both. Contrary to convention, you can pick one or the other in this look.

Want to try pleats and cuffs on your next pair of trousers? We're doing a sale on all custom trousers (click here to learn more). Email us at info@9tailors.com or at call us at 617.286.6135 for an appointment with a Style Consultant.

Meet Dan: "Clothing should convey an understated confidence."

Meet Dan Romero, a stylish 9tailors client who waved goodbye to off-the-rack shopping long ago. As a young professional in a fairly conservative field, this handsome lad always comes to our studio brimming with design ideas that exceed trend-setting. He often creates classic yet modern garments that match his effortless look and cordial demeanor, as seen above in a 9tailors sports coat and shirt.

Name:
Dan Romero

Age:
25

Hometown:
Mansfield, MA

Current Residence:
South Boston, MA

Occupation:
Consultant

How long have you been a 9tailors client?
A year and a half

Why choose custom?
I'm a fairly lean guy, but with broader shoulders, so most off-the-rack shirts don't fit well. Regular cut shirts result in the dreaded "muffin top", whereas slim fit end up too tight up top. Same goes for jackets. I purchased my first custom shirt and jacket from 9tailors last fall and have been hooked ever since.

What inspires your style? Why?

I'm a big fan of "all-American style"—the right blend of classy, casual and rugged. Think JFK, Paul Newman and Steve McQueen.

In terms of elegance in dressing, Luciano Barbera has it figured out. Not only does he make some of the nicest fabrics in the world, but he's probably the world's most elegant dresser. If you were to sum up my thinking on clothing in a quote, it would be this one from him: “True elegance has just one rule: simplicity.”

What is your favorite piece from 9tailors?

My midnight blue, gold-button blazer. It's darker than your run-of-the-mill navy blue version and it has a contrast white polka dot lining and double vent in the back. I wear it almost every day—and get complimented almost as often.

What would be your style advice to other men in your professional field?

Clothing should convey an understated confidence, so do the basics well: dark colors for jackets and pants; solid blues and whites for shirts; a great pair of (usually brown) shoes. Then, add some subtle personal touches: cuff links; contrasting lining; interesting socks.

Quite eloquently said!

Fact: Loops, Lockers, and Oxfords

This curious question was asked by one of my clients when designing a shirt.  We have lots of options for the style of the back of the shirt.  One is a box pleat with a loop.  He asked what the purpose was.  Seeing as I have never used one myself I assumed it was decorative but vowed to hunt down the answer.

Here it is: These little loops were called Locker Loops.  The stories vary as to the origin of these loops but many seem to think it was an East Coast addition that grew out of the sailors influence.  These loops make it easier and quicker to hang your shirts.  Especially if you are on a boat and most likely using hooks as opposed to hangers.
Locker Loop
While we wouldn't recommend hanging your shirts like this as the norm it can be a convenient way to maintain a little order when in a rush or without a hanger.

Another fun bit of information is how school girls used the loops.  Called Fruit Loops the goal was to rip them off the shirts of the boys you found cute.  Of course some prefer quantity over quality and the goal shifted to simply accumulating more than anyone else.

Have any questions regarding your clothing?  Send them our way, we'll do the research for you! Love the loops?  Design yourself a custom dress shirt that has all the bells and whistles you're after. Set up an appointment at info@9tailors.com.

Toe the Line: Fancy Feet

Get formal, don't get stuffy.  First, visit a black tie guide and get the nuts and bolts of this tricky area down.  Then, and only then, when you are completely comfortable with the terrain, add some fun.

Some men use their cuffs to add some flavor, but that's the size of a dime.  If that is your only playground you will be infinitely limited.  Vests, these are for the experts: please don't go prom on us.  If you don't have a teen at the end of your age then these are not appropriate.

So, why don't we venture south of the pant hem.  Not only are these an accessory you can enjoy yourself they are a subtle, yet still strong, way to inject your personality into an ensemble saturated in tradition.

The trick to sport these without looking like you are borrowing your favorite house slipper is the break of your pant. You should aim for a clean break of little to none to make sure there is no puddle of fabric collecting at your ankle- this is only going to accentuate the pajama look.

Stubbs & Wootton

Stubbs and Wooton have an extensive collection of velvet slippers that includes the classic to the quirky.  They can do custom monograms as well for added flair.  Another company, Del Toro, has the same idea with a signature red stripe at the heel, like the Louboutin for men.

Del Toro
Get fancy. Everyone needs a little velvet in their life.  Of course, if you have feet this fancy you're going to need a tuxedo to match.  We haven't done a leopard print, yet.  Email a style consultant at info@9tailors.com for more information- leopard optional.

Candy Colored Cufflinks

Change things up with a dash of color.  Charcoal and navy suits have become wardrobe staples, and for good reason.  But, it can be refreshing to see some color that isn't mistaken for black in low lighting.  Grab a pair of silk knotted cufflinks the next time you stop by to pick up your custom tailored shirts and that new navy suit.  It's the easiest way to add a punch of color and texture without making people think your took your color inspiration from Carmen Miranda.

Stay tuned for the unveiling of more accessories and gadgets that will keep you looking sharp all day long. And, just in case you forgot, here is our email again: info@9tailors.com. OR if you have a tip for a post let me know at kathryn@9tailors.com.

Weddings: Mike and Kadie

Yet another beautiful couple tied the knot in the past few months.  Our longtime client, Mike, came to us for his wedding suit and shirt.  Many modern grooms are eschewing the tuxedo and opting for more practical suits that can be used  often after their vows are said, as Mike did. This look is also a bit more complementary to the country setting.

Congratulations to Mike and Kadie.  And, thanks for letting 9tailors be a part of your big day!

A special thanks to Jennifer Bach for the beautiful photos.  You can check out more of her work, here.

If you're looking to shed some of the stress of wedding planning, let us know and we can coordinate the suits for the wedding party.  Send us an email at info@9tailors.com for more information.

Shirt of the Week!

Just because it's getting dark outside doesn't mean you need to swap all of your colorful items for drab greys and bleak blacks. Anchor your lighter pieces with a darker contrast like one of our clients did below. A pink shirt doesn't need to be reserved for the spring and summer when paired with navy buttons and navy contrasting fabric.

If you want to get the most out of your contrasting buttons go ahead and do a double button cuff. This also works great if you just do a bright button on the cuffs for a more subtle approach.

He didn't want to stop at the collar and cuff but opted for contrasting fabric down the placket as well. This is a great option for a more casual look.
